"A metaphorically cool aromatic impression of lemon, pineapple, white peach and chalk dust in the nose of the Kunstler 2008 Hochheimer Herrenberg Riesling trocken leads to a silken-textured, lusciously-fruity palate with undertones of toasted hickory, salt, and crushed stone. This offers an ideal balance of fruit and nut oil richness with mineral elements as well as textural allure, and laid-back, generous refreshment - characteristics one too often leaves behind when dry German Riesling takes on a more self-consciously important role. And the buoyant aspect of the vintage is flatteringly exhibited as well. I wouldn't be surprised if this remained deliciously versatile for 5-6 years, but don-t miss out on its youthful pleasures. I don't see this in the U.S. market yet, but assuming it is offered there, it will represent excellent value."
2008 Riesling Kabinett trocken Hochheimer Domdechaney, Künstler 91 Punkte
"Purple plum and cherry in fresh and distilled forms, along with orange zest and chalk dust mark the nose and satiny, glossy palate of Kunstler's 2008 Hochheimer Domdechaney Riesling trocken, which incorporates Chablis-like meat-broth, saline savor and nut oils that persist into a subtle finish. The lusciousness of fruit; mystery of carnal and chalky mineral elements; and emerging cherry pit bitterness all complement one another beautifully. This is an example of the real Hochheim Riesling character, very slightly reminiscent of Kallstadter Saumagen or a few other chalky Pfalz or Rheinhessen sites, occasionally of Hallgarten, but distinct from any other wines in the Rheingau. I suspect this will be worth following for 6-8 years. Interestingly, this highly successful Riesling was raised entirely in cask."
2008 Riesling Kabinett trocken Hochheimer Kirchenstück, Künstler 89 Punkte
"Kunstler's 2008 Hochheimer Kirchenstuck Riesling Kabinett trocken displays a rather Muscat- or Scheurebe-like nose not unusual for its vintage, incorporating sage, grapefruit, mint and passion fruit. Glossy and polished in texture, generously juicy, and balancing much as did its dry (non-Pradikat) Herrenberg counterpart, this finishes on a decidedly herbal pungency, and hence less lusciously or multi-facetedly than that wine. Still, with its exemplary balance, this will prove highly versatile over at least the next 3-5 years - one simply must attend carefully to Sauvignon-like aspect in pairing it with cuisine."
2008 Riesling Kabinett trocken „Stielweg" Alte Reben, Künstler 90 Punkte
"The Kunstler 2008 Hochheimer Stielweg Riesling Alte Reben - which was raised roughly 60:40 in tank and cask, and at 13.5% alcohol approaches the norm for recent years - is smoky, char-scented, and lemony, with both the pungent rind and bright juiciness of that fruit. The smokiness emerges on the palate as a peat-like mineral pungency that complements the wine's bitter-sweet zest, although the result is a certain finishing austerity. This is aggressive and gripping in a way that pleasantly reminds me of the penetration of a Highland Malt Whisky. I suspect it will be a challenge but ultimately a rewarding one to play around with this at table over the next 5-6 years."
