"Explanation" and in case of Elios naming: a "solution". But for what? Three old Merlot plants from 1965 (also Elios birth year) - and some cuttings - in the lowest part of his precious Perno vineyard, where red clay is dominant - quite unusual in this area. However, a soil very suitable for a grape variety like Merlot. Hence, Enodatio, the solution for this unique plot with red soil. The main part was planted not long ago, in 2016.
The 2019 vintage is the first (official) vintage and was released this year; a mere 1.5k bottles were made. It was aged for one year in cement and another year in used, old barriques.
My experience with Merlots from Langhe is not very vast, but I believe a Merlot can perform pretty well in this area, by showing a sort of more "rural" and even wilder character. Dark opaque red hue with a vital, shining core. Brooding nose, in need of air to open up. The Enodatio takes you straight into Elios realm. "Terroso", spiced, savory, with the right impetus/nerve and a midweight structure. The rather coolish bouquet develops beautiful aromas of dark cherry, cassis, olive paste, tilled earth with some gravel, dusty purplish florals and some mossy tree bark. Spicy nuances constantly linger. The longer I have the wine in the glass, the more it tells me about it. On one hand, it expresses the simplicity and straightness of the peculiar beauty of a Merlot born in Langa, as a young non Nebbiolo wine. On the other hand, it possesses a lot of sage, prudent Sandri (Elio, Luna & Riccardo) DNA and speaks about where it comes from. 𝑅𝑒𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑎 𝑒𝑠𝑡.
